Course Description
This course will explore the history of public health laws and how those laws work to protect the public. This course will cover a broad array of topics such as: police powers, vital statistics, law enforcement reporting, quarantine and isolation, disease control, epidemics and plagues, reportable diseases and mandated treatment.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Discuss how Public Health works to protect lives
- List 3 enforcement powers of the Public Health Department
- Explain why public health laws were enacted
- Identify limits to their own knowledge, skills and authority
- Identify key system resources for referring matters that exceed these limits
- Communicate the public health information, roles, capacities, and legal authority to all emergency response partners - such as other public health agencies, other health agencies, other government agencies - during planning, drills and actual emergencies
